Flowers Have Been Found in Artwork for Centuries

By: Alex De Mostafa

Even at the dawn of our history, as far back as the Neanderthal era, humans have incorporated flowers for symbolic means. In those earliest days, excavators have dug up proof of flowers that have been piled onto burial grounds, quite possibly as a means of expressing the clearly short life cycle that we are restricted to. We bloom for a time and then fade away, much like flowers do. Remember, this first indication of flowers that are used from people takes place over 120 million years ago in a cave that is in the nation that is currently known as Iraq. Even then mankind was moved from the charm of flowers.

From literature to verse to paintings, flowers have inspired artists because of their charm and their capability to express a wide variety of meanings from the emotional to the philosophical. The famous artist Van Gogh is noted for creating portraits of the sunflower, and Monet who delved in the early impressionist trend created a lot of work incorporating flowers which display the flowing and smeared look of art he is known for. One of the finest flower artist, Georgia O'Keefe created impressive art that displayed calla lilies, she gave them a sensual sort of appearance. Apart from the certainly realistic illustrations of flowers, there also have been the art done on canvas, tiles or perhaps linen that has a more sensuous sort of attraction that is highly passionate in nature. The art of Redoute is celebrated for having impressed the royalty and rich class of France. Even the 60's pop artist of huge fame, Andy Warhol, developed his individual understanding of flower art. He is attributed with making sure that the flower remains a topic honored by modern art as we know it today, offering a spin on the topic that has given flowers even more interpretations than there ever was.
