Who's scared of The Dark Knight

By: Jason Mcdonald

With the long running history of The Dark Knight comes a very sizeable number of villains that have become a part of Gothams serious problems. Compiling a comprehensive list of them along with their details and secret agendas would be more suitable as a paperback or novel so, how about taking a brief look at some of the most accepted and dangerous characters in Batmans Universe.

The Joker is obviously our first villain to talk about. Out of all of the characters to create misery for Batman he must take first place. The Joker, name aside, is not to be taken softly. He is a admirable enemy of The Dark Knight and is exceptionally irregular and dangerous. Jack Nicholson did a remarkable job of playing the character in 1989's Batman

Then up is The Penguin, given his name because of his look and its similarity to the Antarctic bird. With his long, beak-like snout and stocky corpse he is a very vile character. He is, on the other hand, a very bright man. Penguin pictures himself as a person who is above all others, but he is also very much of an outcast. Burgess Meredith played him in the sixties series but of the actors that have played the role Danny DeVito got it down to a tee in 1992's Batman Returns. While we are on the topic of that movie there is also Catwoman to point out. Can anyone actually forget Michelle Pfeiffer's spin of the P.V.C. clad villainess? Celina had already been played exceptionally well previously by the late Eartha Kitt. The owner of the title to the finest catwoman is still debatable

Then there is The Riddler. John Astin and Frank Gorshin both had played as the Riddler in the Batman Series in the late 60's. Jim Carrey Starred in Batman Forever as the Riddler. The Riddler, as his name suggests, is obsessed with riddles. He habitually sends convoluted clues to both The Dark Knight and the police force before committing a crime. The Riddler is often dressed in a green outfit with a domino mask. A lot of the time he is accompanied by two female accomplices named Echo and Query.

Our last adversary of Batman is Mr. Freeze. He originally appeared as a not so dangerous character named Mister Zero. However, after appearing in the Batman series of the sixties on several different occasions he became Mr. Freeze, a far more serious threat to our hero. He is a mad scientist who just so happens to have a great understanding of cryonics. To survive anywhere except for a particular refrigeration unit, Mr. Freeze must wear a special cryogenic suit in order to stay cold. With this suit he has outlandish improved strength and is able to harness the cold to use as a weapon. In Batman and Robin, Freeze was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

With these and each and every one of the other insane criminals The Dark Knight has to deal with, you can understand how hard his struggle truely is.
